Students getting their Bachelor's of Science in Food Science & Human Nutrition tailor their education to the career they desire by selecting from one of our four concentrations. Each concentration prioritizes blending classroom-based experience with experiential learning. Meaning our students can get immersed in their area of study through field trips, study abroad, and undergraduate research projects.
Major Concentrations
Dietetics

Dietetics is the high-tech science of applying food and nutrition to health. It is a vital, growing field open to creativity and opportunity. The Dietetics Program at the University of Illinois is recognized as one of the top dietetic programs in the nation. This program provides a diverse curriculum to meet the standards of education as set by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
Food Science

Food science delves into all the main components of food production. Approved by the Institute of Food Technologists, this concentration teaches to students to integrate chemistry, biology, engineering and food systems to create and market new foods, enhance food safety and manage food supply chains. With this concentration you can graduate on to become a leader in the food industry, pharmaceutical and personal care products industries, or government research institutions.
Hospitality Management

Our Hospitality Management concentration combines the scientific principles of food and nutrition along with the business and management principles for being successful in the hospitality industry. Students have the opportunity to work in the student run Bevier Cafe as well as put on a fine dining experience at the Spicebox restaurant. This concentration is perfect if you're looking for a career in restaurant management, event planning, catering and food service sectors.
Human Nutrition

This concentration focuses on the field of human nutrition and reflects the growing need to prepare individuals for careers in health and nutrition. If you're interested in pursuing advanced degrees in nutritional sciences or professional degrees in medicine, dentistry or law, the human nutrition concentration may be a good fit for you.
