What company do you currently work for and what is your role?
I currently work for Mars Wrigley as an associate scientist in the Chocolate Product Science team.

What are some of your favorite responsibilities in your current role?
My favorite part of my job is trying out new chocolate formulations in the pilot plant and mitigating challenges with new ingredients. Also, having access to a bunch of chocolate!

What other professional experiences have you had and what did you learn from those experiences?
Prior pursuing a degree in food science, I completed my A.A.S in pastry arts. This gave me experience in the culinary industry, especially in breads and confections. These experiences allowed me to further explore food and discover my true passion is for the science of food. Also, I worked as a research assistant in graduate labs throughout undergrad, where I developed an appreciation for experimental design and statistical analysis.

What is your favorite hobby and why does that hobby bring you joy?
Outside of the kitchen, my favorite hobby is hand embroidery and cross stitching. They’re both relaxing activities and I can track my progress as I work on them.

What drew you to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Master of Science in Food Science Program that is delivered online?
While in undergrad, I knew I wanted to pursue a master’s degree, but first wanted to have job experience as a food scientist. The online program was a right fit for me as I got to continue to pursue my career in a role that I enjoy while also advancing my education depth and breadth.

How has the program assisted you in achieving your professional goals?
Pursuit of this program will aid in my career progression as I can select courses that align to my interests. It has provided me with opportunities to expand outside of my current role as well as strengthening hard and soft skills.

What is one piece of advice that you could give to prospective or current students to help them succeed in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Master of Science in Food Science Program that is delivered online?
My advice for students is to continue to learn new things and challenge yourself!
