The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition offers four undergraduate concentrations:  Food Science, Human Nutrition, Dietetics, and Hospitality Management. Successfully transferring into a particular concentration depends on your academic history, following the transfer requirements for the specific concentration, and space availability.

Transferring from another institution

Intercollege Transfer Students – Transferring from another college or major at the University of Illinois

In order to request transfer into one of our concentrations, students must complete a transfer request application and submit it at 260 Bevier Hall.

Applications will be reviewed by the Food Science and Human Nutrition advising coordinators. The student's academic history and professional interest statement will be considered.

Those students admitted to their desired concentration will be assigned to an advisor prior to the registration period. It is the student's responsibility to meet with his/her advisor and plan a program of study. Students are admitted to the program with the understanding that all courses must be taken in their proper sequence and that no prerequisites will be waived. In addition, transfer students may not be able to complete the concentration without staying an additional semester or year, depending on his/her background.

Transfer Requirements

The following are some specific requirements to be considered for transfer into each of our concentrations. These requirements include, but are not limited to:

Hospitality Management

  • Completion of FSHN 140 or FSHN 145 with a grade of B or above
  • Documentation of 320 work hours in foodservice if junior status
  • Contact Ms. Jill Craft to arrange a meeting

Food Science

Human Nutrition

  • Completion of FSHN 101 with a grade of B or above
  • Completion of CHEM 102/103 with letter grades of “C” or higher
  • GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher
  • Particular attention will be given to grades in science and math courses prior to transfer request
  • Contact Dr. Manabu Nakamura to arrange a meeting


  • Completion of FSHN 101 with a grade of B or above
  • NOTE - GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher is needed to be accepted into the highly competitive post-baccalaureate dietetics internships
  • Particular attention will be given to grades in science and math courses prior to transfer request
  • Contact Ms. Justine Karduck to arrange a meeting
