Travel scholarships from the FSHN department are awarded one time per year.

The application will open in February. An email is sent to FSHN Grad Listserve with a link to the application.

The Graduate College issues Conference Presentation Awards in Spring and Fall.

FSHN Department Grad Travel Scholarships

One application is sent out. You will be considered for all travel scholarships that you are eligible for.

Spring Application: Will be considered for the Jeffery, Nishida, Perkins, and Graduate College Conference Presentation award.

Fall Application: Will be considered for the Graduate College Conference Presentation award only.

Elizabeth Jeffery Junior Graduate Travel Award

  • Eligible Travel Period:
    • Spring Award Period – anytime from the beginning of the spring term to the end of the following fall term.
    • Fall Award Period - anytime from the beginning of the previous summer to the end of the following summer.
  • Awards are given as a reimbursement after travel has taken place.
  • You must be registered in the term that you submit the application and the term that you will travel, with the exception of Summer.
  • Money cannot be awarded after you graduate.
  • If you receive one of the department awards, you will be expected to write a Thank You letter to the donor.

Toshiro Nishida Graduate Research Scholarship

The Nishida Graduate Research Scholarship is awarded annually to one or more FSHN graduate students to assist the travel to a national or international scientific conference. Relatively small conferences where the students could have significant interaction with leading researchers in their disciplines are highly recommended. The scholarship recipient will be reimbursed from an endowment fund established in the UI Foundation as a partial reimbursement for expenses incurred for registration and travel to a scientific meeting.

FSHN graduate students who are carrying out research in the areas of biochemical/molecular nutrition, clinical nutrition, and food chemistry may apply for the research scholarship.  Preference will be given to outstanding students conducting research in these areas as related to lipids and other biological components (for example: proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins/minerals, bioactive food components, etc.).

Priority will be given to students at relatively early stage of their graduate careers. Students do not need to present at the meeting. However, presentation of the student’s research is encouraged.

Requirements:

  • Must be in the Food Science & Human Nutrition Department
  • Research in the areas of biochemical/molecular nutrition, clinical nutrition, and food chemistry may apply
  • You do NOT need to present
  • Cannot graduate before conference date

You will be required to provide or upload the following information to the electronic application

  • A copy of abstract or its draft if one will be submitted for presentation
  • Describe how the meeting will enhance your professional development
  • One-page narrative describing your progress in research in coursework (including rubric number, course title, credit hours, and grades)
  • A current CV
  • A recommendation letter from your graduate advisor

E.G. Perkins Fellowship in Lipid Chemistry for Travel

The E.G. Perkins Fellowship in Lipid Chemistry is given annually to a FSHN graduate student to assist funding travel to a national or international scientific conference to present the student's research results.  All graduate students studying food science are eligible to receive this fellowship.  First priority will be given to students whose research applies to lipid chemistry. Second priority will be any student studying food science. Criteria to select the awardee will include the originality and quality of the student's research to be presented at the meeting.

  • Food Science Student
  • Must Present at conference
  • Cannot graduate before conference date
