What is your name?

Abby Christman

What did you earn your undergraduate degree in and from where?

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Missouri – St. Louis

What company do you currently work for and what is your role?

Cosmos Corporation; Formulation Chemist

What are some of your favorite responsibilities in your current role?

Interactions with co-workers and customers, technical presentations, R&D for developing new products, partnering with copackers and development houses on new-to-market ideas and concepts, working for a culture-focused company

What other professional experiences have you had and what did you learn from those experiences?

I previously worked for Sensient Colors in the Food & Beverage business unit for 6 years. It was the most “fun” job I have had in my career thus far. Every day was different! Everything I ever needed to know I learned in kindergarten seemed to hold true 😊 The most validating part was when the products I worked on made it to store shelves, instant gratification!

What is your favorite hobby and why does that hobby bring you joy?

Hiking and any outdoor adventures, really. I love being outside. It is such a vast place and so neat to take in all nature has to offer from the sounds to the surroundings and everything in it’s true, natural form. I really enjoy kayaking and outdoor adventures with my family.

What drew you to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Master of Science in Food Science Program that is delivered online?

The flexibility around my work and life schedule. I work full-time and am a mom, so that takes up a lot of time. The flexibility as well as the course options that the program offered were what set it apart from others I explored.

How has the program assisted you in achieving your professional goals?

Networking opportunities have been such an asset. I have been able to meet a lot of other professionals in the program, as well as professors who have assisted in various ways throughout my career. I was able to provide a “Color 101” for Dr. Bohn’s Food Chemistry class which was super fun! I’ve also been able to dial into some of my peers expertise, as well as a few professors, when trouble shooting stability testing and working with peanut butter (which was new to me!)

What is one piece of advice that you could give to prospective or current students to help them succeed in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Master of Science in Food Science Program that is delivered online?

Utilize all of the resources available to you. Dr. Bohn and all of the professors are there to aid in your success. Email as much as needed. Reach out when you feel unsure. Mostly, just believe in yourself. If there is a program that offers everything and allows balance with work and personal life, this is the one!
