Biographical Sketch

Ms. Karen Plawecki arrived at the University of Illinois in January of 1995. She received her B.S. in Dietetics from Purdue University in 1986. After completing a dietetic internship, she worked as a Clinical Dietitian in Knoxville, Tennessee. She then obtained her M.S. in Nutrition Science with an emphasis in Food Science from Purdue University in 1991. After working in a management/academic role at Purdue, she joined the University of Illinois to work with the Dietetics program. She is the faculty advisor for the Student Dietetic Association. Outside of work, she enjoys cycling, hiking, and golfing. Ms. Plawecki's responsibilities are two-fold, teaching and program directing. She teaches a variety of nutrition and foods courses, including Nutrition through the Lifecycle, Therapeutic Nutrition and Assessment, Contemporary Nutrition, and Food Management. She also serves as the Director for the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). The DPD provides the classroom experience to meet and exceed the competencies for dietetics as set by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The program is approved by the ADA and prepares students for dietetic internships. In her responsibilities as Director, she ensures that the program is in compliance with ADA, prepares and advises students for their upcoming internships, and markets and promotes the program. The Didactic Program at UIUC is well-known and respected. Currently, Ms. Plawecki serves as the President of the Eastern Illinois Dietetic Association.
